Peach And Nectarine Production in MENA

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +9.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average peach and nectarine yield declined slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 17%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of peaches and nectarines were harvested in MENA; waning by -2.2% on the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 7.9%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to peach and nectarine production attained the maximum at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, peach and nectarine exports in MENA expanded slightly to X tons, picking up by 4.2% on 2020. Overall, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, peach and nectarine exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +19.3% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the main exporter of peaches and nectarines in MENA, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 68% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Jordan (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons), together creating a 22% share of total exports. The following exporters - Morocco (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to peach and nectarine exports from Turkey stood at +16.5%. At the same time, Iran (+48.4%), Lebanon (+16.4%) and Morocco (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +48.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Israel (-1.8%) and Jordan (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+30 p.p.), Lebanon (+3 p.p.) and Iran (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Israel (-3 p.p.) and Jordan (-25.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest peach and nectarine supplier in MENA, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Jordan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +22.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Jordan (-12.3% per year) and Morocco (+4.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, overseas purchases of peaches and nectarines were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, peach and nectarine imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of peach and nectarine imports in 2021 were Iraq (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together recording 65% of total import. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Libya (X tons), together committing a 24% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +24.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Iraq ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 56% of total imports.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +19.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 49% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
