Pears And Quinces Market Size in MENA

The MENA's pears and quinces market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Pears And Quinces Production in MENA

In value terms, pears and quinces production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 24%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of pears and quinces production was Turkey (X tons), accounting for 55% of total volume. Moreover, pears and quinces production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Algeria (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Turkey stood at +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (+1.8% per year) and Algeria (-3.1% per year).

In 2022, the average pears and quinces yield in MENA shrank to X tons per ha, which is down by -7.7% against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the yield increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the pears and quinces harvested area in MENA reached X ha, increasing by 3.8% on 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pears and quinces production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of pears and quinces decreased by -22.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, pears and quinces exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. Lebanon (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pears and quinces exports, with a CAGR of +13.7% from 2012 to 2022. Lebanon (-13.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey increased by +44 percentage points.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest pears and quinces supplier in MENA, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lebanon ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports.

In Turkey, pears and quinces exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Turkey totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+16.9%).

Pears And Quinces Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, overseas purchases of pears and quinces decreased by -0.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -11.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pears and quinces imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -8.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Morocco (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the largest importer of pears and quinces in MENA, generating 62% of total import. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8% share, followed by Libya (7.6%) and Iraq (6.2%). Jordan (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +21.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pears and quinces importing markets in MENA were Morocco ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 59% of total imports. Israel, Libya, Yemen, Jordan, Palestine and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Yemen, with a CAGR of +28.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
