Dry Peas Market Size in MENA

In 2021, the MENA's dry peas market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dry peas production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), with a combined 58% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Egypt (with a CAGR of +64.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dry peas yield surged to X kg per ha in 2021, growing by 29% against 2020. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 136% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the dry peas yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The dry peas harvested area was estimated at X ha in 2021, leveling off at 2020 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to dry peas production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of peas (dry) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 130% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, dry peas exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a strong expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), achieving a 9.6% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (dry) exports, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+41 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Egypt saw its share reduced by -10.1% and -19.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest dry peas supplier in MENA, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +21.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+1.1% per year) and Egypt (-9.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of peas (dry) in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 77% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports saw a resilient expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 40% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Iraq (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total imports. Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dry peas imports into Turkey stood at +26.8%. At the same time, Yemen (+27.9%), Iraq (+23.9%), Djibouti (+16.7%), Morocco (+15.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+13.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Yemen emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey, Yemen and Iraq increased by +20, +5.8 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peas (dry) in MENA, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iraq ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at +24.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iraq (+22.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+11.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 10%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
