The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 80%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Egypt (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pimenta pepper production, accounting for 40% of total volume. Moreover, pimenta pepper production in Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Morocco (X tons), twofold. Tunisia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.
In Egypt, pimenta pepper production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-1.0% per year) and Tunisia (+0.9% per year).
The average pimenta pepper yield expanded slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 4.4% on the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of pimenta pepper were harvested in MENA; therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Pimenta Pepper Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2022, pimenta pepper exports in MENA plummeted to X tons, with a decrease of -52.7% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 117%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pimenta pepper exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 105%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Turkey (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented roughly 58% of total exports in 2022. Iran (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together took near 26% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +107.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest pimenta pepper supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Israel ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 77% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +111.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 16% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper export price increased by +67.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+16.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pimenta Pepper Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, supplies from abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -31% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pimenta pepper imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main importer of pimenta pepper, comprising 30% of total imports. Israel (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Algeria (9%), Turkey (8.7%), Tunisia (5.5%), Qatar (5.2%) and Oman (4.5%). The following importers - Libya (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Iran (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of pimenta pepper. At the same time, Iraq (+22.3%), Morocco (+12.9%), Israel (+10.1%), Qatar (+7.2%), Turkey (+6.0%) and Egypt (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2022. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kuwait (-2.6%), Oman (-4.0%), Tunisia (-4.1%), Iran (-4.5%) and Libya (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Israel, Turkey, Iraq and Qatar increased by +7.9, +3.6, +2.6 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 59% of total imports. Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Tunisia, Libya, Iran, Morocco and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
Among the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 28% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper import price increased by +68.5% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
