Pineapple Market Size in MENA

The MENA's pineapple market reached $X in 2022, surging by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed buoyant growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Pineapple Production in MENA

In value terms, pineapple production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 574% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Israel (X tons) remains the largest pineapple producing country in MENA, accounting for 99.9% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Israel stood at +46.6%.

In 2022, the average yield of pineapples in MENA expanded sharply to X tons per ha, picking up by 7.1% on 2021. Overall, the yield enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 526%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The pineapple harvested area contracted dramatically to X ha in 2022, which is down by -17.1% against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Pineapple Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2022, shipments abroad of pineapples decreased by -3.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -12.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 171%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 41% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Oman (X tons), together achieving a 51% share of total exports. Israel (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +42.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in MENA, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+25.9% per year) and Turkey (+39.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 90%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Pineapple Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of pineapples imported in MENA shrank to X tons, falling by -4.6% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 302% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pineapple imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the key importer of pineapples in MENA, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 30% of total imports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Turkey (12%), Israel (11%), Morocco (6.2%) and Iran (5.1%). The following importers - Yemen (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pineapple imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +11.2%. At the same time, Israel (+49.1%), Iran (+19.1%), Morocco (+15.4%), Egypt (+14.2%), Kuwait (+10.8%), Qatar (+7.4%), Oman (+6.4%), Turkey (+3.8%), Yemen (+3.0%) and Saudi Arabia (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +49.1% from 2012-2022. Israel (+11 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+6.2 p.p.), Iran (+3.1 p.p.) and Morocco (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Yemen, Turkey and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -3%, -7.1% and -10.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 56% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +28.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 181%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
