Piper Pepper Market Size in MENA

In 2022, the MENA's piper pepper market decreased by -25.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +48.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Piper Pepper Production in MENA

In value terms, piper pepper production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a significant expansion. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of piper pepper production, accounting for 99.9% of total volume.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Saudi Arabia was relatively modest.

Piper Pepper Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2022, the amount of piper pepper exported in MENA dropped to X tons, with a decrease of -7.8% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, piper pepper exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major exporter of piper pepper in MENA, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 52% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together generating a 32% share of total exports. Oman (X tons), Palestine (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+32.8%), Turkey (+31.8%), Syrian Arab Republic (+21.1%), Palestine (+12.1%) and Oman (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and Syrian Arab Republic increased by +21, +20, +7.8 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest piper pepper supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Palestine ($X), with a combined 82% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +24.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of piper pepper, when their volume decreased by -25.3% to X tons. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, piper pepper imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 78%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Yemen (X tons), together mixing up a 35% share of total imports. Algeria (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+44.8%), Morocco (+34.7%), Yemen (+16.5%), Turkey (+6.5%) and Kuwait (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +44.8% from 2012-2022. Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-1.2%) and Iran (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+14 p.p.), Morocco (+8.3 p.p.), Yemen (+4 p.p.), Iraq (+3.7 p.p.) and Turkey (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Iran and Egypt saw its share reduced by -4.3% and -6.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported piper pepper in MENA, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with an 11% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, piper pepper imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-1.7% per year) and Morocco (+40.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 36%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
