Pistachio Market Size in MENA
The MENA's pistachio market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after five years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a mild increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Pistachio Production in MENA
In value terms, pistachio production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of pistachio production was Iran (X tons), accounting for 56% of total volume. Moreover, pistachio production in Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), with a 13% share.
In Iran, pistachio production increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Turkey (-3.0% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (-0.2% per year).
In 2022, the average yield of pistachios in MENA rose slightly to X kg per ha, growing by 2.2% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the pistachio yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of pistachios in MENA fell rapidly to X ha, waning by -22.7% against 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 83% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Pistachio Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of pistachios, when their volume decreased by -62.9% to X tons. Overall, exports saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, pistachio exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 41%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Iran was the major exporter of pistachios in MENA, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 60% of total exports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 37% share of total exports. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +26.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest pistachio supplying countries in MENA were Iran ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 96% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +24.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Iran ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pistachio Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, overseas purchases of pistachios increased by 38% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 66% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, pistachio imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 119%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) represented the largest importer of pistachios, creating 40% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Israel (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 33% share of total imports. Yemen (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pistachios imports, with a CAGR of +265.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Yemen (+28.5%), Iraq (+24.9%), Libya (+22.1%), Morocco (+20.5%), Qatar (+14.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+10.0%), Saudi Arabia (+7.0%), Israel (+6.7%) and Jordan (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Turkey (+40 p.p.), Yemen (+3.3 p.p.) and Iraq (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3%, -3.3%, -5.3% and -5.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pistachios in MENA, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled +227.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+18.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+10.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 32%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+11.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
