In 2021, the MENA's polystyrene in primary forms market increased by 29% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -22.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) decreased by -1.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 58%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iran (X tons) represented roughly 79% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (6.9%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +61.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Iran ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

Iran, with a CAGR of +59.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 50% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Turkey ($X per ton) and Iran ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) increased by 9.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 10%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 38% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (10%), Algeria (9.4%), Israel (6%) and Morocco (5.9%). Jordan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -8.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+8.0%) and Algeria (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +8.0% from 2012-2021. Jordan, Morocco and Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Israel (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+6.8 p.p.), Algeria (+5.7 p.p.), Egypt (+5 p.p.), Morocco (+2.3 p.p.) and Jordan (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -16.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) in MENA, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at -8.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-1.4% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+7.8% per year).

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
