For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded decline in shipments abroad of portable electric lamps, which decreased by -6.8% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 81% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, portable electric lamp exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X units) and Israel (X units), together making up a 42% share of total exports. Jordan (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +43.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest portable electric lamp supplying countries in MENA were Israel ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports. Jordan lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 5.5%.

Jordan, with a CAGR of +82.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in MENA stood at $X per unit in 2022, jumping by 43% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per unit), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+26.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of portable electric lamps increased by 8.2% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, portable electric lamp imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the largest importer of portable electric lamps in MENA, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 35% of total imports in 2022. Yemen (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Djibouti (10%), Turkey (6%) and Iraq (5.9%). The following importers - Oman (X units), Kuwait (X units), Iran (X units), Algeria (X units), Bahrain (X units), Morocco (X units), Lebanon (X units) and Israel (X units) - together made up 26% of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -2.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Djibouti (+23.7%), Oman (+15.7%), Bahrain (+8.6%) and Iraq (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Djibouti emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +23.7% from 2012-2022. Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Yemen (-3.7%), Kuwait (-4.7%), Algeria (-5.0%), Lebanon (-5.7%), Morocco (-7.6%), Turkey (-9.6%) and Iran (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Djibouti (+9.3 p.p.), Iraq (+3.7 p.p.), Oman (+3.5 p.p.) and Bahrain (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-1.7 p.p.), Yemen (-1.8 p.p.), Turkey (-6.9 p.p.) and Iran (-7.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported portable electric lamps in MENA, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Djibouti ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 7.5% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, portable electric lamp imports contracted by an average annual rate of -13.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Djibouti (+8.3% per year) and Iraq (+0.2% per year).

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -20.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per unit), while Lebanon ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
