The MENA's potato chips market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, overseas shipments of potato chips increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 119%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, potato chips exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Egypt represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 42% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Lebanon (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 52% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato chips exports from Egypt stood at +14.0%. At the same time, Jordan (+79.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+13.8%), Lebanon (+9.3%), Turkey (+6.2%) and Saudi Arabia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +79.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iran (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon increased by +23, +7.6, +2.8 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest potato chips supplier in MENA, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt stood at +15.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+3.1% per year) and Jordan (+82.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 16%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+13.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, overseas purchases of potato chips decreased by -1.6% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -25.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, potato chips imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -21.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Palestine (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Libya (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) were the key importers of potato chips, together mixing up 83% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +133.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potato chips in MENA, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Palestine ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Libya, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +9.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Palestine (+13.9% per year) and Libya (+6.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -6.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
