The MENA's prepared baking powder market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared baking powder production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 44%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA

In 2022, shipments abroad of prepared baking powders increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, prepared baking powder exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Egypt (X tons) represented the main exporter of prepared baking powders, committing 68% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (9.3%), the United Arab Emirates (4.7%) and Saudi Arabia (4.7%).

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the prepared baking powders exports, with a CAGR of +84.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+11.6%), Tunisia (+11.3%), Turkey (+6.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Egypt (+68 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Turkey saw its share reduced by -4.2% and -5.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest prepared baking powder supplier in MENA, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to +84.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+7.2% per year) and Tunisia (+10.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, prepared baking powder export price increased by +28.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 27%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+9.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prepared Baking Powder Imports

Imports in MENA

After seven years of growth, overseas purchases of prepared baking powders decreased by -1.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, prepared baking powder imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +75.8% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.9% share, followed by Iraq (8.2%), Libya (6.2%), Yemen (5.8%) and Oman (5%). Kuwait (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to prepared baking powder imports into Saudi Arabia stood at +10.9%. At the same time, Kuwait (+17.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+13.1%), Libya (+10.6%), Iraq (+5.0%) and Oman (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Yemen (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+20 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+4.2 p.p.), Libya (+2.1 p.p.) and Kuwait (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Oman and Yemen saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -20.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared baking powders in MENA, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 6.5% share.

In Saudi Arabia, prepared baking powder imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+16.6% per year) and Oman (+5.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
