In 2021, the MENA's prepared dish and meal market increased by 3.3% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a mild setback. Prepared dish and meal exports soared to X tons in 2021, growing by 17% against the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, prepared dish and meal exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 38% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (12%), Israel (12%) and Bahrain (6.3%). Tunisia (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+22.7%), Oman (+17.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+10.5%), Egypt (+8.4%) and Israel (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Bahrain (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+11 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.4 p.p.), Egypt (+4.1 p.p.), Tunisia (+2.8 p.p.) and Oman (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Israel (-1.6 p.p.) and Bahrain (-14.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest prepared dish and meal supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Israel ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 72% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Tunisia and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
Oman, with a CAGR of +21.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, overseas purchases of prepared dishes and meals increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

The countries with the highest levels of prepared dish and meal imports in 2021 were the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together amounting to 58% of total import. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), constituting a 5.3% share of total imports. Libya (X tons), Israel (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Iran (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Libya (with a CAGR of +12.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest prepared dish and meal importing markets in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Turkey ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports. These countries were followed by Iraq, Israel, Egypt, Kuwait, Iran, Libya, Morocco, Algeria, Oman and Yemen, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Iraq, with a CAGR of +17.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 5.3%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
