Turkey prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), achieving a 5.7% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +13.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+15.9%) and Morocco (+15.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +15.9% from 2012-2021. Turkey (+36 p.p.), Morocco (+2.7 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest preserved tomato supplier in MENA, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

In Turkey, preserved tomato exports increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+13.1% per year) and Tunisia (+15.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -8.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Preserved Tomato Imports

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of preserved tomatoes decreased by -5.3% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +52.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented roughly 63% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), committing a 16% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +85.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Israel ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 78% of total imports. Qatar, Turkey, Kuwait and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +87.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
