Quince Market Size in MENA

The MENA's quince market dropped slightly to $X in 2021, reducing by -3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Quince Production in MENA

In value terms, quince production expanded to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 26%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) remains the largest quince producing country in MENA, accounting for 53% of total volume. Moreover, quince production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), twofold. Morocco (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.

In Turkey, quince production expanded at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (+6.0% per year) and Morocco (+0.6% per year).

The average quince yield reduced slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, waning by -2.3% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the quince yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of quinces production in MENA contracted slightly to X ha, waning by -1.5% against 2020 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Quince Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2021, exports of quinces in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 22% against the previous year. Overall, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, quince exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +45.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to quince exports from Turkey stood at +9.0%. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+48.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +48.0% from 2012-2021. Syrian Arab Republic (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -2.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest quince supplier in MENA, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Syrian Arab Republic ($X), with a 2.5% share of total exports.

In Turkey, quince exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-0.8%).

Quince Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2021, approx. X tons of quinces were imported in MENA; jumping by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 82%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, quince imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Iraq (X tons) was the largest importer of quinces, committing 40% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Saudi Arabia (12%), Oman (11%), Israel (11%) and Syrian Arab Republic (4.7%). Jordan (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to quince imports into Iraq stood at +21.7%. At the same time, Oman (+89.9%), the United Arab Emirates (+28.5%), Jordan (+18.5%), Israel (+5.6%), Syrian Arab Republic (+4.5%) and Saudi Arabia (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +89.9% from 2012-2021. Iraq (+21 p.p.), Oman (+11 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+8.5 p.p.) and Jordan (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Syrian Arab Republic, Israel and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -4%, -7.7% and -18.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest quince importing markets in MENA were Iraq ($X), Israel ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 73% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Syrian Arab Republic and Oman, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Among the main importing countries, Oman, with a CAGR of +65.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -20.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
