Exports by Country
In 2021, Israel (X tons) was the main exporter of quinoa, generating 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together making up a 42% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +152.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Israel ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +132.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 100%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of quinoa decreased by -10.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, quinoa imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 133%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Israel was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together comprising a 34% share of total imports. Lebanon (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Israel increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+72.1%), the United Arab Emirates (+69.7%), Qatar (+61.6%), Saudi Arabia (+34.7%), Turkey (+30.8%) and Lebanon (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +72.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+18 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+5.3 p.p.), Morocco (+4.6 p.p.), Turkey (+3.4 p.p.) and Qatar (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Lebanon (-4.3 p.p.) and Israel (-34.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quinoa in MENA, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Israel amounted to +8.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+57.8% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+21.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, waning by -19.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (-1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
