Rabbit Meat Market Size in MENA
In 2022, the MENA's rabbit meat market decreased by -0.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.8% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Rabbit Meat Production in MENA
In value terms, rabbit meat production expanded remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a modest expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of rabbit meat production was Egypt (X tons), comprising approx. 88% of total volume. Moreover, rabbit meat production in Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Algeria (X tons), eightfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Egypt amounted to +2.8%.
In 2022, the average yield of rabbit or hare meat in MENA contracted slightly to X kg per head, remaining constant against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 9.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per head; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
The global number of animals slaughtered for rabbit meat production dropped slightly to X heads in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, approx. X tons of rabbit or hare meat were exported in MENA; which is down by -3.9% on the previous year. Overall, exports showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 132% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rabbit meat exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 151% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Jordan dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Oman (X tons), creating a 9% share of total exports. Lebanon (X kg) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Jordan decreased at an average annual rate of -11.5% from 2012 to 2022. Lebanon (-11.3%) and Oman (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Jordan (+46 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Jordan ($X) remains the largest rabbit meat supplier in MENA, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Jordan stood at -15.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Oman (-23.5% per year) and Lebanon (-15.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -24.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (-4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Rabbit Meat Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of rabbit or hare meat imported in MENA rose rapidly to X tons, surging by 5.9% against the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rabbit meat imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kuwait (X tons) was the main importer of rabbit or hare meat, achieving 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Qatar (X tons), together comprising a 49% share of total imports. Oman (X kg) held a little share of total imports.
Imports into Kuwait increased at an average annual rate of +15.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+119.3%) and Oman (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +119.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-17.6%), Yemen (-25.0%) and Qatar (-37.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kuwait (+46 p.p.), Morocco (+19 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.7 p.p.) and Oman (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Yemen (-4.4 p.p.) and Qatar (-57.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kuwait ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rabbit or hare meat in MENA, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 13% share.
In Kuwait, rabbit meat imports increased at an average annual rate of +15.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+115.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-12.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 97% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
