Cows Skin Market Size in MENA

In 2021, the MENA's cows skin market decreased by -13% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after seven years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Cows Skin Production in MENA

In value terms, cows skin production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 46%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Iran (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Iraq (X tons), together comprising 47% of total production. Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, Morocco, Yemen, Tunisia and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +9.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in MENA

In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of bovine animals, when their volume increased by 29% to X tons. Overall, exports posted modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cows skin exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented the key exporter of raw hides and skins of bovine animals, constituting 43% of total exports. Yemen (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Oman (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Israel (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 36% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Iran (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cows skin exports from Saudi Arabia stood at +34.7%. At the same time, Israel (+42.9%), Oman (+18.4%), Algeria (+7.7%), Jordan (+6.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +42.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-4.0%), Yemen (-6.1%), Iran (-8.7%), Lebanon (-10.2%), Tunisia (-17.9%) and Iraq (-20.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+40 p.p.), Oman (+6.6 p.p.), Israel (+5.8 p.p.) and Jordan (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -2%, -3.7%, -4.3%, -13.4%, -13.9% and -15.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest cows skin supplier in MENA, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 7.5% share.

In Saudi Arabia, cows skin exports increased at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (+41.5% per year) and Oman (+9.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 47% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, purchases abroad of raw hides and skins of bovine animals was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. In general, imports posted a strong increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cows skin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cows skin imports into Turkey stood at +10.4%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+25.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +25.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and the United Arab Emirates increased by +17 and +2.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of bovine animals in MENA, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 1.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to -3.7%.

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -45.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates totaled $X per ton.
