The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), achieving a 7.7% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest refractory bricks, blocks and tiles supplier in MENA, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports.

In Turkey, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+7.0% per year) and Egypt (-0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, supplies from abroad of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles increased by 44% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the major importers of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles, together achieving 75% of total imports. The following importers - Bahrain (X tons), Oman (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Libya (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +9.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Iran ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 53% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +9.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
