Rice Market Size in MENA
In 2021, the MENA's rice market decreased by -9.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Rice Production in MENA
In value terms, rice production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Egypt (X tons) remains the largest rice producing country in MENA, accounting for 61% of total volume. Moreover, rice production in Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), threefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.
In Egypt, rice production plunged by an average annual rate of -2.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (-4.3% per year) and Turkey (+1.4% per year).
The average rice yield rose modestly to X tons per ha in 2021, picking up by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, approx. X ha of rice were harvested in MENA; waning by -7% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.
Rice Exports
Exports in MENA
In 2021, shipments abroad of rice was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), achieving a 6.3% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lebanon (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 6% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Lebanon (with a CAGR of +53.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 89% share of total exports. Lebanon and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6%.
Among the main exporting countries, Lebanon, with a CAGR of +41.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Rice Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2021, supplies from abroad of rice decreased by -2.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rice imports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Iraq (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Iran (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) represented roughly 66% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Djibouti (X tons), comprising a 6.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkey (X tons), Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Libya (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Djibouti (with a CAGR of +25.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Iraq ($X) and Iran ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 50% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Oman, Turkey, Jordan, Kuwait, Djibouti, Qatar, Syrian Arab Republic and Libya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
Djibouti, with a CAGR of +22.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -6.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
