The MENA's roasted coffee substitutes market shrank to $X in 2021, falling by -11.7% against the previous year. The total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +16.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in MENA

Roasted coffee substitutes exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 40% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) represented the major exporter of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes, making up 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), achieving a 27% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to roasted coffee substitutes exports from Egypt stood at +8.7%. At the same time, Turkey (+23.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-2.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+20 p.p.) and Egypt (+8.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -3.8% and -3.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest roasted coffee substitutes supplier in MENA, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 1.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt amounted to +12.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+25.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-3.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 63%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, purchases abroad of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes increased by 35% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 55%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Algeria was the largest importer of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes in MENA, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2021. Jordan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Turkey (10%), Palestine (9.2%), Tunisia (7.8%), the United Arab Emirates (6%) and Israel (4.5%).

Imports into Algeria increased at an average annual rate of +34.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Jordan (+41.1%), Turkey (+27.3%), Palestine (+15.5%), the United Arab Emirates (+7.2%), Tunisia (+3.6%) and Israel (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +41.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Algeria, Jordan, Turkey and Palestine increased by +32, +10, +6.7 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest roasted coffee substitutes importing markets in MENA were Algeria ($X), Jordan ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports.

Jordan, with a CAGR of +50.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -13.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+16.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
