In 2022, the MENA's market for salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal increased by 9.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, production of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 9.9% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal exported in MENA expanded sharply to X tons, increasing by 5.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 62%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal reached $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 34%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 59% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 29% share, followed by Iran (5.3%). The following exporters - Oman (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.4% share of total exports.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal exports, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkey (-3.2%), Oman (-6.2%) and Palestine (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates and Iran increased by +47 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal supplier in MENA, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Palestine, with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates stood at +18.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+2.6% per year) and Palestine (+5.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Palestine (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2022, purchases abroad of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal increased by 9.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the key importer of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal in MENA, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 49% of total imports in 2022. Lebanon (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (8.6%), Iraq (7.3%), Qatar (7%) and Oman (5.5%). Turkey (X tons) and Libya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +1.9%. At the same time, Libya (+10.4%), Iraq (+10.3%), Turkey (+8.8%), Oman (+7.2%) and Kuwait (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012-2022. Lebanon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Qatar (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+17 p.p.), Iraq (+5.2 p.p.), Kuwait (+3.5 p.p.), Oman (+3.3 p.p.), Turkey (+2.9 p.p.) and Lebanon (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Qatar saw its share reduced by -13.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal in MENA, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon, with an 8.8% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, imports of salted, dried or smoked meat, and offal expanded at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (-8.7% per year) and Lebanon (+0.1% per year).
