Exports in MENA
In 2021, sesame oil exports in MENA surged to X tons, increasing by 24% on 2020. Overall, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 124%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sesame oil exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 125%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Yemen (X tons), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) represented the largest exporters of sesame oil, together generating 87% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +61.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sesame oil supplying countries in MENA were Yemen ($X), Lebanon ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 78% of total exports. Syrian Arab Republic, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.
Among the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +50.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, supplies from abroad of sesame oil decreased by -22.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, sesame oil imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the key importers of sesame oil in 2021, finishing at approx. 38% and 32% of total imports, respectively. Israel (X tons) held a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Oman (6.2%) and Qatar (4.8%). Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sesame oil importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of +21.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sesame oil import price decreased by -8.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
