From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +27.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average sesame seed yield contracted modestly to X kg per ha in 2022, which is down by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 8.7% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The sesame seed harvested area expanded rapidly to X ha in 2022, surging by 6.4% against the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sesame seed production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, approx. X tons of sesame seed were exported in MENA; surging by 12% on the previous year. In general, exports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, sesame seed exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 38%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 48% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +33.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sesame seed supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Egypt ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +28.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, imports of sesame seed in MENA stood at X tons, standing approx. at the previous year. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -16.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 30%. Imports by Country
Turkey represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 37% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Iran (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 47% share of total imports.
Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+5.0%), Egypt (+4.0%), Saudi Arabia (+1.6%) and Lebanon (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +5.0% from 2012-2022. Iran and Israel experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Turkey (+6.8 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Israel (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sesame seed in MENA, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 9.4% share.
In Turkey, sesame seed imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+4.3% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 24%. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
