Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheep leather exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia was the main exporting country with an export of about X square meters, which accounted for 33% of total exports. Algeria (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Tunisia (10%), the United Arab Emirates (9.5%), Iraq (9.4%), Turkey (7.7%) and Jordan (5.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheep leather exports from Saudi Arabia stood at -10.0%. At the same time, Turkey (+21.3%), Tunisia (+4.4%), Jordan (+3.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+3.7%) and Algeria (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Iraq (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+7.5 p.p.), Turkey (+6.9 p.p.), Tunisia (+6.2 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.4 p.p.) and Jordan (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-18 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 58% of total exports. These countries were followed by Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Jordan, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +16.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per square meter, increasing by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 4.9%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per square meter), while Jordan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-4.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, overseas purchases of sheep or lamb skin leather decreased by -10% to X square meters, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X square meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheep leather imports fell notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 20%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey represented the key importing country with an import of about X square meters, which reached 74% of total imports. Yemen (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (5.1%). The following importers - Tunisia (X square meters) and Lebanon (X square meters) - together made up 5.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheep leather imports into Turkey stood at +2.6%. At the same time, Yemen (+43.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Yemen emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +43.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-8.0%), Tunisia (-22.3%) and Lebanon (-25.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Yemen increased by +34 and +12 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skin leather in MENA, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Yemen, with a 3.1% share.

In Turkey, sheep leather imports declined by an average annual rate of -8.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-28.0% per year) and Yemen (+24.1% per year).
