The MENA's sheepskin and lambskin market rose modestly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Turkey (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together comprising 51% of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sheepskin and lambskin yield declined modestly to X kg per head in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 3.6%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in MENA rose notably to X heads, surging by 8.1% compared with the year before. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. In 2021, overseas shipments of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Iran (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together resulting at 90% of total export.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplying countries in MENA were Iran ($X), Yemen ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 67% share of total exports. Turkey, Iraq, Tunisia, Kuwait and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Kuwait, with a CAGR of +13.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Yemen ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+14.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sheepskin And Lambskin Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2021, approx. X tons of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) were imported in MENA; picking up by 13% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkey prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 92% of total imports in 2021. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lebanon (+19.1%) and Syrian Arab Republic (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lebanon emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Syrian Arab Republic and Lebanon increased by +2.6 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in MENA, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Syrian Arab Republic ($X), with a 1.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to -18.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Syrian Arab Republic (-6.0% per year) and Lebanon (-4.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (-12.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
