In 2021, overseas shipments of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) decreased by -9% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 85%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sheet piling exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 306% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the key exporter of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel), comprising 53% of total exports. Bahrain (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons). All these countries together took near 41% share of total exports. Turkey (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +32.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bahrain (+61.7%), Jordan (+52.4%), Oman (+18.3%) and Turkey (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +61.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kuwait (-3.1%) and Saudi Arabia (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United Arab Emirates (+53 p.p.), Bahrain (+19 p.p.), Oman (+6.3 p.p.), Jordan (+5.3 p.p.), Kuwait (+4.2 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+3.1 p.p.) and Turkey (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest sheet piling supplier in MENA, comprising 22% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bahrain ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Jordan, with a 4.5% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, sheet piling exports increased at an average annual rate of +30.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bahrain (+60.1% per year) and Jordan (+59.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 140% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, the amount of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) imported in MENA declined sharply to X tons, with a decrease of -40.1% compared with the year before. Overall, imports saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 233%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sheet piling imports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 121% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 35% of total imports. Jordan (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (12%), Bahrain (6.4%), Iraq (5.9%) and Oman (5.4%). Kuwait (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +42.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Jordan ($X) and Iraq ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 61% share of total imports.
Jordan, with a CAGR of +41.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iraq (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
