Imports into Israel increased at an average annual rate of +15.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Palestine (+24.6%), Egypt (+18.8%), Oman (+11.7%) and Kuwait (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +24.6% from 2012-2021. Qatar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Israel (+47 p.p.), Oman (+8 p.p.), Egypt (+5.6 p.p.), Palestine (+2.3 p.p.) and Qatar (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -4.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked fish other than salmon and herring in MENA, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Israel totaled +15.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-4.9% per year) and Egypt (+27.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 89% against the previous year.
