Exports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon exported in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 86% on the previous year. In general, exports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, smoked salmon exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 44% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together committing a 50% share of total exports. Lebanon (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +145.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest smoked salmon supplier in MENA, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 18% share.
In Turkey, smoked salmon exports increased at an average annual rate of +119.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+153.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 110%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
Smoked salmon imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 25% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 61%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, smoked salmon imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a notable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Israel (X tons) was the main importer of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon, making up 46% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (10%) and Kuwait (5%). Jordan (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Oman (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Israel increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iraq (+27.2%), Turkey (+25.8%), Morocco (+5.1%), Jordan (+1.8%) and Kuwait (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Oman (-4.4%), Egypt (-4.7%), the United Arab Emirates (-9.5%) and Qatar (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Israel (+33 p.p.), Turkey (+9.2 p.p.) and Iraq (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Qatar (-21.2 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (-21.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon in MENA, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 14% share.
In Israel, smoked salmon imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+32.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-8.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, smoked salmon import price increased by +37.5% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
