Egypt was the largest exporter of smoking pipes and cigar or cigarette holders in MENA, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 74% of total exports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (9.3%). Tunisia (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -10.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+17.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (+10.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.5%) and Lebanon (-19.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+10 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+7.9 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lebanon and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3.8% and -16.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest smoking pipe supplier in MENA, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 6.5% share.

In Egypt, smoking pipe exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+24.4% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+29.8% per year).

Morocco dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Libya (X tons), constituting a 9.1% share of total imports.

Imports into Morocco decreased at an average annual rate of -3.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Libya (+29.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Libya (+8.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Morocco (-8.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoking pipes and cigar or cigarette holders in MENA, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Libya ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

In Morocco, smoking pipe imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Morocco stood at $X per ton.
