Soft Drink Market Size in MENA

In 2021, the MENA's soft drink market decreased by -1.3% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Soft Drink Production in MENA

In value terms, soft drink production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 9.7%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in MENA

Soft drink exports declined to X litres in 2021, which is down by -9% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink exports contracted to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the largest exporting country with an export of around X litres, which recorded 44% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X litres) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X litres) and Kuwait (X litres). All these countries together took near 36% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lebanon (X litres), Egypt (X litres) and Oman (X litres) - each reached an 8.7% share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kuwait (+31.3%) and Oman (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +31.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-2.5%), Lebanon (-3.9%), Egypt (-4.1%) and Saudi Arabia (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+28 p.p.) and Kuwait (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -21.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest soft drink supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 73% of total exports. Lebanon, Kuwait, Egypt and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Kuwait, with a CAGR of +28.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per litre, growing by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per litre), while Kuwait ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, overseas purchases of soft drinks decreased by -8.8% to X litres, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 7.5% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X litres), followed by the United Arab Emirates (X litres), Israel (X litres), Turkey (X litres), Libya (X litres), Yemen (X litres), Jordan (X litres), Palestine (X litres), Syrian Arab Republic (X litres) and Kuwait (X litres) represented the largest importers of soft drinks, together making up 75% of total imports. The following importers - Iraq (X litres), Qatar (X litres) and Morocco (X litres) - each resulted at a 12% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Turkey ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 33% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Palestine, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Morocco, Qatar and Syrian Arab Republic, which together accounted for a further 55%.

Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +23.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per litre, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per litre), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iraq (+11.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
