Spinach Market Size in MENA

In 2022, the MENA's spinach market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Spinach Production in MENA

In value terms, spinach production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 35%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of spinach production, accounting for 59% of total volume. Moreover, spinach production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Egypt (X tons), with a 7.8% share.

In Turkey, spinach production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (+7.3% per year) and Egypt (-2.8% per year).

The average spinach yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 14%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of spinach production in MENA expanded modestly to X ha, growing by 1.5% on 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 13%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the spinach harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Spinach Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2022, exports of spinach in MENA shrank significantly to X tons, waning by -38% on the previous year. Overall, exports saw a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 157% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spinach exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 106%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Palestine (X tons), together committing a 22% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+69.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+35.0%), Jordan (+31.9%), Palestine (+3.8%) and Lebanon (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +69.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+8.6 p.p.), Lebanon (+4.1 p.p.), Palestine (+3.7 p.p.) and Morocco (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-2.5 p.p.) and Egypt (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest spinach supplier in MENA, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lebanon ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled -12.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lebanon (+3.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+50.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 60%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+23.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Spinach Imports

Imports in MENA

In 2022, purchases abroad of spinach increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 239% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, spinach imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the major importer of spinach, making up 52% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Qatar (13%) and Kuwait (12%). The following importers - Oman (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 8.2% of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Jordan (+159.6%), Morocco (+36.3%), Saudi Arabia (+34.8%), Kuwait (+19.1%), Oman (+9.7%) and Qatar (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jordan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +159.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan and Morocco increased by +13, +13, +12, +2.9 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spinach in MENA, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 15% share.

In the United Arab Emirates, spinach imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+24.1% per year) and Kuwait (+26.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 87%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
