Strawberry Market Size in MENA
The MENA's strawberry market amounted to $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), with a combined 87% share of total production. Iran, Yemen and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iran (with a CAGR of +7.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average strawberry yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -2% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 7% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of strawberries production in MENA contracted modestly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to strawberry production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, approx. X tons of strawberries were exported in MENA; with a decrease of -4.7% compared with the year before. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, strawberry exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +63.4% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of strawberries, namely Turkey, Egypt and Morocco, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest strawberry supplying countries in MENA were Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Turkey ($X), together comprising 95% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +4.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, strawberry export price increased by +49.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Strawberry Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of strawberries imported in MENA declined markedly to X tons, dropping by -49.7% against the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, strawberry imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Iraq (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Oman (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) were the main importers of strawberries, together creating 97% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +49.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest strawberry importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Qatar ($X) and Kuwait ($X), together comprising 72% of total imports. Oman, Syrian Arab Republic, Bahrain and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +60.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
