Sugar Beet Market Size in MENA

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together comprising 93% of total production. Morocco lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +6.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sugar beet yield rose markedly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 6.8% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the sugar beet yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the sugar beet harvested area in MENA stood at X ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 9.2%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sugar beet production attained the maximum at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Sugar beet exports shrank sharply to X tons in 2022, reducing by -68.6% against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 531%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 415%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugar beet exports, with a CAGR of +42.8% from 2012 to 2022. Syrian Arab Republic (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt increased by +82 percentage points.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest sugar beet supplier in MENA, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Syrian Arab Republic ($X), with a 0.6% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-1.3%).

Imports in MENA

Sugar beet imports soared to X tons in 2022, increasing by 20% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 171%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 219% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Oman represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 67% of total imports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (9.5%) and Qatar (6.3%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Oman was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugar beet imports, with a CAGR of +42.0% from 2012 to 2022. Kuwait (-2.1%), the United Arab Emirates (-3.0%), Saudi Arabia (-18.6%) and Qatar (-22.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Oman (+67 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+11 p.p.), Kuwait (+6.4 p.p.) and Qatar (+6.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Oman ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugar beet in MENA, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 4.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 3.9% share.

In Oman, sugar beet imports expanded at an average annual rate of +24.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-18.5% per year) and Qatar (-13.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -25.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 131% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
