The MENA's sugary soft drink market reduced to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, sugary soft drink production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of sugary soft drinks increased by 8.3% to X litres, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugary soft drink exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +54.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the key exporting country with an export of around X litres, which amounted to 55% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X litres) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X litres) and Kuwait (X litres). All these countries together took near 33% share of total exports. Algeria (X litres), Oman (X litres) and Lebanon (X litres) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kuwait (+32.8%), Oman (+22.1%), Lebanon (+10.1%), Algeria (+9.8%) and the United Arab Emirates (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kuwait emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman increased by +31, +6.5, +2.4 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest sugary soft drink supplier in MENA, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +15.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-2.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per litre in 2022, rising by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per litre), while Algeria ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of sugary soft drinks decreased by -2.6% to X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 20%. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports amounted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +51.9% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X litres), followed by the United Arab Emirates (X litres), Yemen (X litres), Syrian Arab Republic (X litres), Kuwait (X litres), Iraq (X litres), Libya (X litres), Oman (X litres) and Israel (X litres) were the key importers of sugary soft drinks, together generating 78% of total imports. The following importers - Iran (X litres), Qatar (X litres), Palestine (X litres) and Jordan (X litres) - each amounted to a 12% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +26.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 42% of total imports. Yemen, Iraq, Israel, Libya, Oman, Jordan, Palestine, Qatar, Syrian Arab Republic and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Among the main importing countries, Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per litre), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
