In 2021, sulphonamides exports in MENA skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 51% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight descent. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphonamides exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Israel prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kuwait (X tons), constituting a 4.8% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Israel decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +4.0% from 2012-2021. Kuwait experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Kuwait (+4.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Israel ($X) remains the largest sulphonamides supplier in MENA, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 0.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Israel stood at -2.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-18.9% per year) and Kuwait (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (-1.0%).

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of sulphonamides, when their volume decreased by -8.9% to X tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphonamides imports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 8%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), Israel (X tons), Egypt (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) represented the largest importers of sulphonamides, together generating 91% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sulphonamides importing markets in MENA were Turkey ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports. Iran, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +22.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 6.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sulphonamides import price decreased by -5.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
