Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, exports of tapioca and substitutes in MENA declined remarkably to X tons, which is down by -30.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 80%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tapioca and substitutes exports reached $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 49%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Oman represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 43% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Lebanon (13%), Syrian Arab Republic (10%) and Jordan (5.2%). The following exporters - Morocco (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to tapioca and substitutes exports from Oman stood at +9.0%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+12.2%) and the United Arab Emirates (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-5.2%), Lebanon (-8.5%), Syrian Arab Republic (-8.6%) and Jordan (-32.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Oman (+36 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+17 p.p.), Lebanon (+2.8 p.p.), Morocco (+2.7 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+2.4 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Jordan (-60.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Oman ($X), Lebanon ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 59% of total exports. Morocco, Jordan, Syrian Arab Republic and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Among the main exporting countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +25.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 60% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+32.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, the amount of tapioca and substitutes imported in MENA surged to X tons, picking up by 30% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 63%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, tapioca and substitutes imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 157%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the main importer of tapioca and substitutes in MENA, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 49% of total imports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by Kuwait (8.8%) and Oman (4.7%). Bahrain (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Israel (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +25.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tapioca and substitutes importing markets in MENA were Saudi Arabia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Kuwait ($X), with a combined 83% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Kuwait, with a CAGR of +25.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -19.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
