In 2022, taro (cocoyam) imports in MENA fell to X tons, reducing by -5.6% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 134%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of (cocoyam) imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, taro (cocoyam) imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of (cocoyam) imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 67% of total imports in 2022. Oman (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kuwait (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons). All these countries together took near 31% share of total imports.
Imports into the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -1.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahrain (+108.5%), Qatar (+32.8%), Kuwait (+27.3%) and Oman (+23.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +108.5% from 2012-2022. Oman (+8.3 p.p.), Kuwait (+7.8 p.p.), Qatar (+7.7 p.p.) and Bahrain (+5.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -14.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported taro in MENA, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with an 11% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, taro (cocoyam) imports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+55.3% per year) and Oman (+40.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+17.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
