Asphalted paper exports contracted sharply to X tons in 2022, waning by -40.5% on the previous year. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, asphalted paper exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 79%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 57% of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (11%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asphalted paper exports from Turkey stood at -16.5%. Saudi Arabia (-9.2%), Egypt (-14.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-13.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest asphalted paper supplier in MENA, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at -13.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-9.9% per year) and Egypt (-10.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, overseas purchases of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard increased by 77% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 325% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, asphalted paper imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 255% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Egypt dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 75% of total imports in 2022. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) took an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (6%). Turkey (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Syrian Arab Republic (+39.2%), Algeria (+29.5%) and the United Arab Emirates (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Syrian Arab Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +39.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Turkey (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt, Syrian Arab Republic and Algeria increased by +39, +7.6 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard in MENA, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with a 6% share.
In Egypt, asphalted paper imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+2.5% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+41.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
