The MENA's tissue paper market soared to $X in 2022, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper increased by 7.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 26%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, tissue paper exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 63% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 30% share of total exports. Jordan (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tissue paper exports from Turkey stood at +9.2%. At the same time, Algeria (+48.1%), Egypt (+32.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+16.9%) and Tunisia (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +48.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Jordan (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+11 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+5.4 p.p.), Turkey (+2.6 p.p.) and Algeria (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Jordan (-14.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest tissue paper supplier in MENA, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 9.1% share.

In Turkey, tissue paper exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+33.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+15.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 33% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, MENA recorded decline in purchases abroad of toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper, which decreased by -12.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tissue paper imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Israel (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) represented roughly 32% of total imports in 2022. Kuwait (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.5% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (8.1%), Qatar (7.7%), Lebanon (5.6%) and Oman (4.6%). The following importers - Morocco (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Israel ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported toilet or facial tissue stock, towel and similar paper in MENA, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iraq ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Israel totaled +8.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iraq (+17.7% per year) and Kuwait (+16.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
