In general, exports recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved tuna exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 45%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Oman (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together finishing at 91% of total export.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +54.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Yemen ($X), Oman ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 52% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +59.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, approx. X tons of tuna (prepared or preserved) were imported in MENA; picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved tuna imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Libya (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) was the largest importer of tuna (prepared or preserved) in MENA, generating 64% of total import. Israel (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.4% share, followed by Algeria (6.4%). The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Oman (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +47.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest preserved tuna importing markets in MENA were Egypt ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Libya ($X), together comprising 50% of total imports. These countries were followed by Yemen, Israel, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Oman, which together accounted for a further 46%.
Among the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +46.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 37%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Egypt ($X per ton) and Israel ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) and Oman ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
