Turkey Meat Market Size in MENA

In 2022, the MENA's turkey meat market increased by 1.7% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a mild decrease. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Turkey Meat Production in MENA

In value terms, turkey meat production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Israel (X tons), together accounting for 77% of total production. Turkey and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of turkey meat in MENA declined to X kg per head, flattening at 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 9.5%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the turkey meat yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for turkey meat production in MENA reduced modestly to X heads, almost unchanged from the previous year. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the number of producing animals increased by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number reached the maximum level at X heads in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MENA

In 2022, overseas shipments of turkey meat decreased by -42.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 65% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X tons) and Israel (X tons). All these countries together took near 22% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lebanon (+33.0%), Tunisia (+10.6%) and Morocco (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lebanon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-2.7%) and Israel (-25.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+48 p.p.), Tunisia (+9.6 p.p.), Morocco (+4 p.p.) and Lebanon (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Israel saw its share reduced by -43.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest turkey meat supplier in MENA, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 6% share.

In Turkey, turkey meat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (-26.4% per year) and Tunisia (+8.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, imports of turkey meat in MENA shrank to X tons, dropping by -1.9% against 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Palestine represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 40% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Egypt (7.8%), Saudi Arabia (7.3%) and Bahrain (5%). Jordan (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Palestine decreased at an average annual rate of -1.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+30.6%), Iraq (+7.4%) and Lebanon (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +30.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-4.1%), Kuwait (-6.1%), Bahrain (-6.1%), Jordan (-18.3%), Qatar (-24.8%) and Saudi Arabia (-28.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Palestine (+28 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+11 p.p.), Egypt (+7.6 p.p.), Iraq (+3.1 p.p.), Bahrain (+2.5 p.p.), Kuwait (+1.6 p.p.) and Lebanon (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Jordan (-3.9 p.p.), Qatar (-7.4 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (-47.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest turkey meat importing markets in MENA were Palestine ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Saudi Arabia ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Egypt, with a CAGR of +23.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, declining by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
