In 2021, after five years of growth, there was decline in the MENA's orange juice (single strength) market, when its value decreased by -1.3% to $X. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +47.3% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -0.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, exports of orange juice (single strength) in MENA reduced to X tons, shrinking by -5.8% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 45% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Kuwait (10%), Morocco (9%) and Israel (5.9%). Turkey (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Saudi Arabia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the orange juice (single strength) exports, with a CAGR of +25.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+16.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.4%) and Morocco (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Israel (-7.9%), Turkey (-9.9%) and Kuwait (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+39 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+12 p.p.), Morocco (+2.1 p.p.) and Egypt (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey, Israel and Kuwait saw its share reduced by -6.1%, -6.5% and -39.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the largest orange juice (single strength) supplier in MENA, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Saudi Arabia amounted to +23.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+4.9% per year) and Morocco (+3.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Orange Juice (Single Strength)

Imports in MENA

Orange juice (single strength) imports declined to X tons in 2021, waning by -6.9% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 128%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 90%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Libya represented the key importer of orange juice (single strength) in MENA, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Israel (9.4%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Qatar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Libya increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Israel (+82.3%), Qatar (+23.1%), Turkey (+20.8%), Iran (+15.2%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +82.3% from 2012-2021. Bahrain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-9.1%), Algeria (-11.4%), Jordan (-24.5%) and Iraq (-33.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Libya, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Bahrain, Iran and Qatar increased by +42, +9.4, +2.7, +2.4, +2.1, +2 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Libya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported orange juice (single strength) in MENA, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 12% share.

In Libya, orange juice (single strength) imports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (-7.5% per year) and Israel (+82.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, orange juice (single strength) import price decreased by -17.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
