In 2021, the MENA's wadding market decreased by -9.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wadding production expanded significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -8.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MENA

In 2021, the amount of wadding exported in MENA soared to X tons, jumping by 76% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded prominent growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wadding exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed resilient growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), creating an 8.3% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+23.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+19 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -12.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest wadding supplier in MENA, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +13.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+37.7% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -1.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 12%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of wadding, when their volume decreased by -4.6% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 19%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, wadding imports totaled $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +108.0% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Iran (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the largest importers of wadding in 2021, resulting at near 22% and 21% of total imports, respectively. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Iraq (X tons) and Algeria (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 25% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Israel (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Libya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +16.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wadding importing markets in MENA were Iran ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Iran, with a CAGR of +18.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Libya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
