In value terms, wheat and meslin flour exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +41.3% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2022. Oman (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 12% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kuwait (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.9% share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+13.8%), Egypt (+8.1%), Kuwait (+6.6%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Oman increased by +4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest wheat and meslin flour supplier in MENA, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Oman, with a 5.3% share.
In Turkey, wheat and meslin flour exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+11.4% per year) and Oman (+10.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 23% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wheat and meslin flour export price increased by +57.7% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +3.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Iraq (X tons) was the main importer of wheat and meslin flour, constituting 48% of total imports. Yemen (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons). All these countries together took near 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Saudi Arabia (X tons), Palestine (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) - each finished at a 9.5% share of total imports.
Imports into Iraq increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Yemen (+32.6%), Syrian Arab Republic (+22.5%), Djibouti (+9.3%), Palestine (+7.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.6%) and Saudi Arabia (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Yemen emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +32.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Yemen and Syrian Arab Republic increased by +17 and +8.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Iraq ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat and meslin flour in MENA, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Yemen ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Iraq stood at +1.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Yemen (+29.3% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+19.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
