In 2022, purchases abroad of wheat gluten increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat gluten imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a prominent expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Turkey was the largest importer of wheat gluten in MENA, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 58% of total imports in 2022. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took near 35% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+12.4%), Egypt (+11.8%), Saudi Arabia (+5.4%) and Israel (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +12.4% from 2012-2022. Turkey (+4.2 p.p.) and Egypt (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Saudi Arabia and Israel saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -6.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat gluten in MENA, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 13% share.

In Turkey, wheat gluten imports increased at an average annual rate of +12.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+5.2% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+7.1% per year).
