In 2022, the MENA's wood chips and particles market increased by 12% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a deep downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Production of Wood Chips And Particles in MENA
In value terms, wood chips and particles production dropped sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 220%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MENA
In 2022, the amount of wood chips and particles exported in MENA skyrocketed to X cubic meters, increasing by 39% against 2021 figures. In general, exports saw pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 237%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 72%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the largest exporting country with an export of around X cubic meters, which finished at 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters) and Turkey (X cubic meters), together constituting a 38% share of total exports. Lebanon (X cubic meters) and Morocco (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +16.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+55.8%), Lebanon (+36.1%) and Morocco (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +55.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (+40 p.p.), Turkey (+12 p.p.) and Lebanon (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-36.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest wood chips and particles supplier in MENA, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 14% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, wood chips and particles exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+3.0% per year) and Turkey (+48.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, falling by -17.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per cubic meter), while Egypt ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Wood Chips And Particles
Imports in MENA
In 2022, purchases abroad of wood chips and particles increased by 69% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt setback. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 38%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Turkey dominates imports structure, accounting for X cubic meters, which was near 97% of total imports in 2022. The United Arab Emirates (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood chips and particles imports into Turkey stood at -17.3%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +3.5% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -2.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips and particles in MENA, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey stood at -16.1%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per cubic meter, with a decrease of -24.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood chips and particles import price increased by +35.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 64%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
