In 2021, cotton fabric exports in MENA surged to X tons, with an increase of 85% against 2020 figures. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cotton fabric exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), constituting a 6.8% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+15.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Morocco (-2.8%) and Tunisia (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey and Egypt increased by +13 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest cotton fabric supplier in MENA, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey amounted to +3.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+8.2% per year) and Tunisia (-5.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Egypt ($X per ton) and Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Cotton Fabric Imports
Imports in MENA
In 2021, cotton fabric imports in MENA soared to X tons, jumping by 26% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cotton fabric imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Iran (X tons) were the main importers of woven fabrics of cotton, together creating 88% of total imports. The following importers - Yemen (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) - each finished at a 4.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Yemen (with a CAGR of +67.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cotton fabric importing markets in MENA were Tunisia ($X), Turkey ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 62% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Iran, Yemen and Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Yemen, with a CAGR of +73.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Yemen (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
