Over the period under review, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 352% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, silk fabric exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Turkey dominates exports structure, finishing at X square meters, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. The United Arab Emirates (X square meters) held a little share of total exports.
Turkey was also the fastest-growing in terms of the woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exports, with a CAGR of +25.5% from 2012 to 2021. The United Arab Emirates (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkey increased by +33 percentage points.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 41%. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per square meter), while Turkey totaled $X per square meter.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (-1.6%).

Imports in MENA
In 2021, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste increased by 91% to X square meters for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eight-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, silk fabric imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates was the largest importer of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste in MENA, with the volume of imports recording X square meters, which was near 43% of total imports in 2021. Turkey (X square meters) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tunisia (12%) and Iraq (7.7%). Qatar (X square meters), Morocco (X square meters) and Egypt (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Turkey ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 87% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Iraq, Morocco, Qatar and Egypt, which together accounted for a further 9.2%.
Among the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of +22.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per square meter, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per square meter), while Egypt ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
