In 2021, the MERCOSUR iron angle market increased by 9.6% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after five years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 69%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron angle exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the main exporter of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2021. Peru (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Argentina (11%).

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -1.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Argentina (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +5.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Argentina (+4.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Brazil (-1.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest iron angle supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

In Brazil, iron angle exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (-2.6% per year) and Argentina (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) imported in MERCOSUR surged to X tons, picking up by 36% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iron angle imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Colombia (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Peru (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Chile (X tons) represented the largest importer of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) in MERCOSUR, creating 88% of total import. It was distantly followed by Paraguay (X tons), generating a 5.1% share of total imports. Uruguay (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Paraguay (with a CAGR of +3.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Colombia ($X), Argentina ($X) and Peru ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 65% share of total imports.
