Argentina (X tons) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander producing country in MERCOSUR, accounting for 99% of total volume.

Anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports expanded significantly to X tons in 2022, increasing by 7.7% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 34%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 24%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Brazil represented the major importer of anise, badian, fennel and coriander in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 50% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons), together generating a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - Chile (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports into Brazil stood at +2.4%. At the same time, Paraguay (+7.1%), Peru (+5.8%), Colombia (+5.7%), Chile (+4.1%), Ecuador (+4.0%) and Argentina (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +7.1% from 2012-2022. Peru (+4.6 p.p.), Colombia (+2.3 p.p.) and Paraguay (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Brazil saw its share reduced by -1.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported anise, badian, fennel and coriander in MERCOSUR, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at +2.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+14.5% per year) and Ecuador (+3.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
